Here’s a run report from the mountain run from Saturday just gone…

We all met at 6.30am at the new Home Depot/Target location ready to take the trip up to Helen for a joyful run in the mountains. Included in the trip were:

  1. Simon
  2. Justin
  3. Ryan
  4. Matt
  5. Pam (si’s Wife)
  6. John (Scottish bloke)

The last two had decided to mountain bike the trail whilst we ran it.(Which was a great help if some distress was caused by any runner). We all clambered into one vehicle, and made our way up to Helen. Upon arrival, the road that winds it’s way up the side of the Hooch” was closed to traffic, and hence campers – my first thoughts was “hhmmm” (I’ve run this before alone and it was a bit unnerving..!) Anyway we all got ready, Ryan had a little brain fart trying to work out which shoes to wear (just like dressing up to go clubbing), Justin had his hydropak ready…!!!! (yes he had fluids).

At exactly 7:53am we began the run, crossing the bridge and making our way up the gravel road. (It was dead quiet). The two mountain bikers were getting ready and would catch us up. The run was a series of long climbs followed by a few downs, which helped as each climb got considerably harder the further were ventured into the hills. Ryan, Justin, Matt all set a good pace, and I hung around the back wondering why I was left in the dust, and where did their pace come from! Over the next few miles we ran without incident, unfortunately the keen three at the front took the wrong turn and did about 100 yds before the bikers put them right. I had caught up by this time. By now the climbe was getting slightly steeper, and longer, everyone was actually running very well, each settling into their own pace.

About three miles in, Justin had a set of legs and ran up the hill around the bend, about 10 seconds later, he was running back down as fast as a “rioter from the cops”, as he had just spotted a bear! This made Pam real nervous, because not only was there a predator, but we went to look for it!!! The bear thought Justin looked like a toothpick and went on its way for better meat.

We regrouped, again settling into a rythym, with Ryan and Justin out in front, when again a bear jumped out right in front of them, almost like “peek-a-boo”, saw the lack of meat, and too went on it’s way. This was most fun for us behind watching.

By now we were approaching the 6 mile mark, all regrouped, ran together, took a gel each and the bikers went on ahead. After a slight reprieve, we ran along a flat area, and some runners came from the other direction, they were highschool kids that must have been dropped at the top of the climb we were about to tackle. This climb went on, and on and on, we all got split up on this one, and by about the 10 mile mark, Justin and I had made the top for the turn off, and took a breather. John decided to cycle down the mountain to check on the other runners (Ryan & Matt) whom were all were nearby, so none had not been eaten, yet.

The next phase has the downhill, unfortunately, it was very overgrown, and scrapped your legs, Ryan did not like this one bit, no sireee….. After that run uphill, it was nice to run down, but to be lacerated in the process. Matt was very good at running down. By about the 2nd mile, we came to an abrupt stop and there were two bear cubs playing in the trees, where was mummy? We waited for Ryan, knowing that he was in a foul mood, and made sure he didn’t need to be pulled out of the jaws of local forest dwellers.

The run down did clear up, but on weary legs proved it’s own challenge, now the stones were bigger, and the trail steeper. But at the middle of this downhill where two very steep climbs, the leg muscles had to switch very quickly and re-adapt.

The last two miles were a good gradient downhill, which both Justin and I settled into a real good pace, knowing the car was nearby.

After 2hrs 30mins we completed the run. John & Pam were waiting, a couple of donuts were devoured, and we all sat in the river to cool down.

It was a great run, everyone ran well, it was 16 miles of grueling running, in a quiet, un-spoilt location. The bears made it an eventful run, not often you get to see that many, though they were probably disappointed with the menu that day…and wondered what the human race is coming to.

Mountain Training Run

Team Runners Fit had their annual mountain run in preparation for the 2011 BRR on Saturday.  Simon organized the run called “The Upper Houch” just outside of Helen, GA.  The run consisted of 16 miles of forest service roads and many good climbs and descents.  It also consisted of some run ins with wildlife.  We saw a total of 4 bears during the morning run!  Luckily the bears were more scared of us than we were of them.  Justin can scare anything away apparently.  One of the forest service roads hasn’t been used much in the last decade and was overgrown pretty bad which lead to some interesting moments.  Overall the run was a great preparation for the BRR and gets us one step closer to it!

All of us soaking our legs in the Chattahoochee River after the run.

First Team Meeting

Team Runners Fit will have our first BRR team meeting on Saturday at 3 p.m. The location is yet to be determined.  At the meeting we will be choosing which legs each runner will be running.  This always adds to the excitement of the event and should increase the amount of trash talk between the two teams.  We will also discuss lodging, transportation, equipment, food, and supplies needed for the event.  We will also plan our mountain and night group runs.  The 2011 edition will bring some additional challenges to the planning of the race since we have two teams competing this year.  Hopefully this first meeting will help iron out most of the details and get us on our way.

First 2011 BRR Meeting

Once again Team Runners Fit will be participating in the Blue Ridge Relay.  This is the 4th year in a row we will be represented in the 208 mile relay race.  This year, we will have 2 teams competing for the first time ever.  Here are the 2011 teams!

We can’t wait for the start on Sept. 9th in Virginia!

The start times have been officially assigned for the 2010 BRR.  Team Runners Fit will be starting at 10:oo a.m. on Friday Sept. 17th.  Last year we started at 9:30 a.m. and in 2008 we started at 10.  I guess we are consistent then.

The 9:30 start of the 2009 BRR

Dustin has secured our haunted cabin for our lodging for Thursday night.  We have stayed at the same cabin every year and I have yet to actually sleep the night before the race.  At first I thought it was because I was nervous/excited about the BRR but last year I learned it is because the place is haunted.  Hopefully the ghosts will go after the new guys this year.

Simon has taken care of the van rental as well.  It will be another beautiful white 15 passenger van to go along with the other 200 white passenger vans on race day.

The boys in front of the van in 2009. This is obviously before the race started as we were all looking happy and fresh.

Now the only thing we have left to do is get in shape.  We can’t wait for the start line!

Every year we try to get in a group night run to test out our equipment and get somewhat accustomed to night running.  We typically run out close to Jefferson on some dirt roads due to the lack of street lights but this year we are heading closer to town to run around a prison.  Luckily there will still be no street lights and we figured running by a prison can mimic the scary night feeling you get running all alone in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains at 3 in the morning.

Group Night Run : Saturday, August 28th – Kroger on Hamilton Mill Rd.  8:30 p.m.

Night Group Run 2008

The Blue Ridge Relay squad was announced for Team Runners Fit on Tuesday.  The 2010 version will see some major changes from the last 2 years due to scheduling conflicts and fitness issues.  The only runners left from the original team are Dustin Smith and Ryan Kyranakis.  Scott Watson who was on the team last year will be on the squad for his second go around.  The new comers for 2010 are Alex King, Frank Hill, and Simon Williams.  All three are very good runners so we are looking forward to challenging our team record.  Having the course shortened by 3 miles will help with that as well.  We will also have 2 drivers this year instead of the 1 we have used over the first 2 years.  Mark Brennan and Rahn Lieberman will be taking turns driving throughout the trip.

We held our first BRR meeting Tuesday night at Runners Fit to assign our relay legs, schedule future training runs, and figure out the logistics going forward.  We should be hearing back from the Blue Ridge Relay director soon about our start time which is always exciting.

Here is the 2010 Blue Ridge Relay Team:

Runner 1 – Frank “Mountain Goat” Hill

Runner 2 – Ryan ” Coach K” Kyranakis

Runner 3 – Simon “The Brit” Williams

Runner 4 – Scott “Doc” Watson

Runner 5 – Dustin “Sgt” Smith

Runner 6 – Alex “Rookie” King

Driver – Rahn Lieberman

Driver – Mark Brennan
